Pastiche

This is my Pastiche I made after Artist and Designer (and probably my favorite artist right now) Christopher Cox. The assignment was to choose an artist and emulate their style. Chris doesn’t have just one style. He does everything! He does illustrations, political posters, apparel design, typography… you name it, he’s probably dabbled in it. I first came across Chris in a magazine called Computer Arts. He had been featured for some of his more colorful painted looking work. I was so inspired by the paint splattered face that I made my own piece called Inspire. I made my own splatters from watercolor and scanned them in and fiddled with them, then added in my own eye and the twin peaks tower from San Francisco that I took as well. I have used that image in several pieces including my mac catalog cover.

My pastiche however is based off some of his other print work. He does a series of halftone women, or parts of women (usually eyes and lips are dominant) combined with a bunch of geometric shapes, lines, dots and colors. I like how it turned out for the most part. As my teacher said, “lose the key”. Haha.

Raquel Aparicio

Raquel Aparicio

I came across this artist and I really love the sweet style of her illustrations. Some of them have an incredible amount of detail. She uses a very muted and tame colors often harmonious, and some of her illustrations border the bizarre and surreal. She has illustrated for children’s books, Rolling Stone magazine, New York Times, and many others. Go check out her site:

Eve Skylar

I was walking along the booths at Zine Fest and came across an artist by the name of Eve Skylar. She and her partner, Rick Kitagawa, were selling zines and artwork under their shared company Monkey and Seal. I didn’t buy their zine, (now regretting not picking up a copy of “Bad Date Zine”), but instead I bought one of her beautiful prints called “Delicatessen” inspired by and named after the movie “Delicatessen”. It is a clever little pen and ink illustration depicting a meat market (of human body parts) for fish. The tables have turned and now fish eat humans! I love the butcher with his cigar and facial expression. It is quite obvious that hours and hours of careful drawing was put into this beautiful artwork. She said to me “I definitely have a new appreciation for fish scales.”

Barnaby Ward

Picture 25Stumble does it again. What a find! Barnaby Ward, an illustrator and  comic book writer has captured my attention. It seems he already has atleast one book out of his illustrations and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. I came across his website and really admired him for his simple, flat coloring with a muted color palate and sketchy style. I also love his combination of beautiful girls and bizarre monsters. They may be strange, but they are still endearing and beautifully done. He even is nice enough to create desktop backgrounds to download. Check out his work at

Tape Sculpture DIY

Mark Jenkins

So I was stumbling and I came across this guy, Mark Jenkins  that does some pretty clever installations both indoors and out. They are the kind that when you walk by them you do a double take because you think you see a real person stuck in a mail bin or sitting on a roof. They are meant to catch your eye and shock you. They are often created to cause scene, something to look at and then you chuckle and look at it again and marvel in it for its brilliance. A few that caught my eye were the ones made out of tape. I first thought they were ice, but then I looked at his info page and at the bottom there’s a tutorial he gives about how to cast things (not yourself) with saran wrap and packing tape.  I think that’s such a cool idea that when I have a free weekend I will try to do some. Here are more of his installations. Learn how to do it here: http://www.xmarkjenkinsx.com
